PlentyofFish have forums where you can get lots of advice about writing your profile, and they also organise free singles events. I find it a very friendly and helpful site, and have had no spam or any other problems when using it.

I consider myself to be a fairly advanced PC user; I was able to clear off the garbage fairly easily and prevent it from coming back, but someone with less knowledge would end up with their privacy invaded.
"Free" still isn't free.
